The Brixton Kitchen chef contest is now down to its final two contestants. You have until midnight tomorrow (Tuesday 15 July) to bid in a ballot to win a seat at the table as the chefs’ dinner services are tasted by the competition’s celebrity judges.
If you are not lucky enough to win a place at the table, you can still share feedback with the judging panel on the finalists’ cooking as they serve free takeaway lunches outside 14d Market Row on Saturdays 19 and 26 July. Lunch – walk-ins only – will be served from 12.30 to4.30pm or until the food runs out.
On Sundays 20 or 27, the finalists will be serving a full dinner service to 30 people, including the judges, at Bottle & Rye in Market Row from 6.30pm. Entry is only by the ballot.
Run by Brixton Village, the contest saw 20 chefs selected from more than 60 applicants cook their “Best Bite” in Round 1.
Six got through to Round 2, serving full menus to judges Gizzi Erskine, Robin Gill and, Melanie Brown.
Two contestants remain: Philippe Sonou, and the team of Layla Morris and Luke Moody.
Joké Bakare, the British Nigerian-born winner of the first Brixton Kitchen contest in 2019 while running Chishuru in Brixton’s Market Row, in 2023 became the first Black woman in the UK to be awarded a Michelin-star and was also chef of the year in last year’s National Restaurant Awards.
Bid to join the judges at Bottle & Rye.
