A Brixton councillor, John-Paul Ennis, was named Young Councillor of the Year at the Cllr Awards organised by the LGIU, an independent, not-for-profit organisation working to strengthen local democracy around the world.

Winners in each category of the awards have all made positive and lasting impacts on the lives of their constituents and have shown exceptional leadership skills, LGIU said.

Ennis, from Stockwell, became the youngest mayor in London at 27 last year.

He is a councillor for Brixton North Ward. He has a community organising and campaigning background and is currently Lambeth council’s policy lead for young people.

The citation for the award said he believes passionately that everyone should have a chance to be part of democracy and decision-making.

John-Paul Ennis received his award from Dr Annabel Mullin, director of communications for Elect Her, a non-partisan organisation working to motivate, support and equip women to stand for political office

“As the youngest-ever mayor of Lambeth, he has made it a particular mission to engage young people, with initiatives like opening up the town hall and touring schools,” said LGIU.

“He also co-founded a campaign for a community land trust in Lambeth and was instrumental in developing community land trust homes across London.”

Winners were chosen by a panel of senior councillors and stakeholders from the local government sector.
