Make It in Brixton has discovered some lost treasure and you might hold the key.

Last year seven forgotten canvases were discovered in a corner of the basement at the Brixton Recreation Centre.

Although there is no hard evidence, their style and content suggest they are paintings from the ‘Haiti High!’ exhibition held in the Brixton Art Gallery in 2004 which showcased the work of some 60 Haitian artists.

These seven canvases reflect a traditional Haitian style of bold, colourful, story-telling. They are more representational than abstract and the artists have used a vibrant visual language to create a window on everyday life in Haiti. They are full of charm and lovingly rendered detail.

You can see some of them in The Lounge, 58 Atlantic Road, where they will be on show until Monday 28 February.

It would be good to try to pin them down.

Make it in Brixton are very keen to find out more about the identity of the artists and how these paintings ended up in the Rec. If you have any information they’d love to hear from you on info@inbrixton.org.
