New Brixton rum wins award

Seven months after its launch, the Brixton Distillery Company’s Market Row Botanical Rum has won a silver medal in an international challenge.

It scored in the rum and cane spirits, spiced rum super premium, section at this year’s International Spirits Challenge.

BDC director Patrick Venning congratulated the Market Row based team of distiller Matthew Servini, fellow director Laurent Lacassagne and Mikey Hirsch that developed and markets Market Row Botanical Rum.

“Whilst this is big news for us, what really matters is the consumer feedback that we have been getting which has been fantastic,” said Venning.

Market Row Rum is a blend of pot still rums from distilleries in Jamaica, Barbados and the Dominican Republic, matured in former bourbon barrels.

It is re-distilled by Matt Servini in Brixton with botanicals sourced from Brixton market – including Nigerian hibiscus, Kenyan black tea and rose petals from Pakistan – and bottled without additional sugar, flavourings or colouring.

The distillery, in Impact Brixton, a community-led co-working space in Market Row arcade, houses BDC’s 100-litre contemporary copper and steel pot still

The rum is hand packed under the guidance of Servini, who has more than 20 years’ experience in the drinks industry, and will be passing this on by training an apprentice distiller.
