O2 Brixton

Location: 41 Electric Avenue, SW98JP

Artist: Brigitte Stepputtis

This artwork is inspired by the dome at the entrance of the legendary grade 2 listed music venue Brixton Academy, now known as the O2 Academy Brixton. This great cultural centre is shown at night, decorated with strips of neon, which enhance the three-dimensional effect of its roof, the arced light features also communicating the idea of stage lighting as experienced at a concert. The repeated pattern is also inspired by Art Deco, a prominent style in historic Brixton architecture.

Brigitte Stepputtis works in a range of media; film, photography, assemblage, prints and emerging digital technologies. While many of her works have a highly aestheticized surface quality, they all share a point of view that is essentially political, often drawing on influences from the arts culture of her native Germany. Her solo exhibitions include Röhsska Museet, Gothenburg; Hanmi Gallery, London and Fondazione Gervasuti, 56th Biennale di Venezia and a two-artist show at Cheongju Art Centre, South Korea. Brigitte was one of 10 invited artists who created a public work for the 2012 London Cultural Olympiad. She most recently showed at the Mdina Cathedral Contemporary Art Bienale in March 2020.

Brigitte Stepputtis is a member of Warrior Studios, an artist collective operating in Brixton since 1990.
