The London Community Gospel Choir (LCGC) has donated a song to help raise funds to organise memorial events and support members of BAME communities hit by COVID-19.

While BAME people are 14% of the UK population, they represent 35% of virus victims, according to the Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre.

The LCGC regularly perform at the UK’s greatest events including the FA Cup Final and Glastonbury, and are regulars at Royal Albert Hall.

The Majonzi Fund was launched by Patrick Vernon, OBE and the Ubele Initiative, an African diaspora led intergenerational social enterprise. The fund has raised more than 40k since 21 April.

Proceeds from the LCGC song Sun in the Rain will add to continuing donations via its GoFundMe site.

Patrick Vernon said: “It is fantastic that one of the most successful and respected gospel choirs in Europe are supporting the fundraising efforts as part of the community response to COVID-19.

“The Majonzi Fund will provide small grants to help families, work colleagues, community groups organise memorial events for BAME individuals who have died as a result of COVID-19.

“Having lost a family member to COVID-19, it is important that families and local communities have the support around bereavement counselling and the opportunity to commemorate the life of loved ones.”

Bazil Meade, MBE, founder and director of the choir said: “I take great pleasure in joining my colleagues in the London Community Gospel Choir in being part of this initiative.”

Sun in the Rain is available from all major streaming sites including SpotifyAmazon and iTunes.
