Big Joanie describe themselves as Black Feminist Punk.
They are, of course, just one among a number of acts who could be described similarly – Brixton’s own Poly Styrene springs to mind and there have been many others.
What’s particularly interesting about this trio is that their non-starry, approachable demeanour seems to encourage others, many of them artists of colour, into a movement which seeks to re-imagine identity and social expectations.
Their take on post-punk is artful but never pretentious, cool but never aloof, and political but always framed by the personal.
They are in their own words: ‘like The Ronettes filtered through 80s DIY and riot grrrl with a sprinkling of dashikis’. What’s not to love?!
