Mums and kids get creative for Brixton International Women’s Day

The #MotherWorks photography exhibition is back in Brixton at the Library from Monday 2 March to Saturday 4 April. It was first seen in Brixton in 2018, celebrating International Women’s Day in the much-missed Brixton Pound Cafe.

It was part of the Royal Photographic Society’s 100 Heroines exhibition at The London Design Festival and is soon to be shown in the House of Commons.

Motherworks is the vision of local photographer Fiona Freund designed to champion and celebrate the lives of Brixton’s working mums. From midwives to cleaners and teachers to accountants, it’s a celebration of Brixton’s mothers.

Fiona says: “My pictures of the world of working mums today, illustrate their amazing achievements, and show their difficult, complicated and consequently sometimes hilarious lives.”

On International Women’s Day, 8 March, from 12 – 4pm the exhibition will form a backdrop for a community creative event at Brixton library.

Local artist Claire Dorey will host a postcard work shop – Past, Present and Future:

She says: “We tweet, text and Instagram every day and in many ways the post card was the original form of social media.”

Mums and kids will learn basic post card layout, through drawing, collage and creating personal messages for someone special. The postcards will be copied and made into a giant community artwork that can then be on show in the library as a lasting legacy of the exhibition and event.

Local garden design and maintenance company, Sprout Up, will be running a gardening workshop for children, showing parents what easy planting things you can do at home to help get more people connecting with nature, whatever space you have.

Mums are invited to put their feet up in the #MotherWorks chair, take a selfie with friends and family and be celebrated for everything they do. They are the heart of Brixton.
