Electric Avenue to become first patterned street

Electric Avenue could be Britain’s first patterned market street after Lambeth council and the Brixton Project – a successor to the Brixton Design trail – called on local artists to submit pattern-based design proposals for the shop shutters. Designs will be shortlisted by the businesses in the street and winning designs installed in April.

The Electric Patterns Project is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of the  five-year Brixton Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI).

It has so far supported the extensive repair and restoration of the Victorian buildings on Electric Avenue, including reinstating traditional shopfronts, producing new paving, street lights and the electric Electric Avenue sign.

This project is one of the final projects in the £2m initiative.

The Brixton Project said: “Our ambition is for the designs to manifest the positive spirit of Brixton, its people, culture and heritage, now and with a nod to the future.

“It should be an abstraction of Brixton’s essential spirit – a new style for Brixton that moves us on from the mural designs and street art in a way that is fresh, bold, modern, joyful and irreverent.”
