A Brixton local cinema will host the first screening of the movie Hero on 22 June, Windrush Day, writes Lucy Williams.

Based on the extraordinary life of Trinidadian war veteran Ulric Cross, it will be shown as part of the Windrush celebrations and then later released nationwide in July.

After its first screening at the BFI Southbank, Tony Fairweather, of Fairweather Productions said, “Mr Ulric Cross story hit me on so many levels. Here was a humble man who made a difference in the world. A lost piece of Caribbean history that all nations need to see.”

Hero producer and director Frances-Anne Solomon has cast celebrated British actors Joseph Marcell (Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) and Jimmy Akingbola (Holby City) in the movie.

All screenings are in conjunction with community partners such as Black Cultural Archives (BCA) whose director Arike Oke said, “For me it’s a story about becoming who you are, not who society says you are, and about understanding how each individual can influence the course of history and society. It’s an important story for all generations and one that BCA wants to uncover and celebrate.”

Other partners of the film include Fairweather productions, Gee Stor Productions Ltd along with support from celebrities from the media, theatre and cinemas.

If you want to book tickets, the first public showing is at the Ritzy. You can find tickets here.
