Young carers celebrate completing arts project

Up to a third of young carers are looking after someone suffering from mental health problems writes Gargie Ahmad. Yet the mental health and wellbeing of the young carers themselves often goes unsupported.

Mental Health The Arts, a creative arts academy for young people with experience of mental health problems, was piloted locally, sponsored by Lambeth Made.

The organisation was set up by young carer, social entrepreneur, and mental health research ambassador Angela Awuah.

It provided six young carers with nutrition education, life coaching, cognitive behavioural therapy and art workshops over six weeks.

Family, friends and supporters attended the first graduation ceremony in Brixton’s Lambeth town hall (above) and heard from the young carers what they had learned.
