The local Thrale Charity is again seeking applications for grants of up to £5,000 from organisations based in Brixton and surrounding areas.

A total of up to £40,000 is available to distribute to good causes.

Criteria for an award are very broad. The charity says it is happy to fund any organisation that helps to relieve need or distress.

Brixton-based organisations that Thrale has funded recently include The Advocacy Academy, St Matthew’s Project and Disability Advice Service Lambeth. Eighteen local groups received grants in the last round of awards.

Eligible organisations will be based in the southern part of Lambeth and parts of Wandsworth (Tooting and Balham) and Dulwich.

For more information and a simple application form, visit the charity’s website.

The closing date for applications is Monday 3 December.

The charity, full name The Thrale Almshouse and Relief in Need Charity, also runs almshouses for women over 60 in Streatham.

Its aim is “to foster local communities that are resilient and sustainable; creating good places in which to live and grow older”.

A small organisation, it is run by six volunteer trustees from the local community, supported by an executive officer who works for the charity a couple of days a month.

Its £2 million fund dates back to the Thrale family of the 18th century and beyond.

The charity is looking for two new trustees to join its board, including someone with housing management or wider housing association/almshouse experience.

The closing date is 30 November.
