High Trees wins grant for language support programme

English speakers of other languages classes at High Trees Community Trust

High Trees Community Development Trust in Tulse Hill has been awarded three-year funding to run a “Strength in Words” programme. The grant from the City Bridge Trust  will allow High Trees to expand its English for Speakers of other Languages (ESOL).

Strength in Words will work with individuals to improve their English through a programme of classroom based ESOL courses, structured but informal conversation clubs, learning trips and community volunteering. The project will target Lambeth residents who have English skills below Entry 3 and are classed as disadvantaged (unemployed or earning below London Living Wage).

If you or someone you know could benefit from this increased ESOL provision give High Trees a call on 0208 671 3132 or email courses@high-trees.org to find out more about the courses and how to register.

Margaret Pierre, Director of High Trees Community Development Trust said: “High Trees are absolutely delighted to receive this funding from the City Bridge Trust.

“We know that our tailored programme of classroom-based learning, informal conversation clubs, learning trips and community volunteering are absolutely transformational to those we engage with and gives individuals the skills and confidence to grow and engage in community life”

Each year, the funding from City Bridge will allow ESOL classes to be delivered to 96 students and 48 students to attend Conversation Clubs

The project has two main aims:

  • To improve English Skills and confidence in using the English language

To equip individuals with increased understanding and application of the English language, including speaking, listening, reading and writing, and subsequently with the confidence in using it independently

  • To increase involvement in community life

To equip individuals with the knowledge and practical experience of accessing a range of local services and community networks, promoting and developing peer support and confidence to
