Gas works on Brixton Road will not be confined to the already-announced lane closures on the A23 north of Normandy Road that will begin on Monday 31 July.
SGN, the company that runs local gas networks, says that it will be back in spring/summer 2018 to continue the replacement of old gas mains from Normandy Road south to Wynne Road which is just north of the Esso petrol station.
It also needs to replace gas mains under Brixton Road near Coldharbour Lane. SGN is planning these phases with Lambeth council and says it will provide further details once planning is complete.
The first phase, beginning in less than a fortnight, will see sections of the centre two lanes on the A23 Brixton Road closed, with all traffic using the bus lanes.
SGN says the lane closures will only be in place in the section of road around its site. The rolling lane closures will move southward along Brixton Road.
The cycle track at the junction of Brixton Road and Camberwell New Road will be closed for about five weeks at the start of the work. Cyclists will be required to join other traffic with signage to direct them.
Bus stops near the work area will not be in use.
The work will be suspended from Sunday 17 December to minimise disruption over Christmas and will recommence at the start of January.
SGN intends to have this phase of its work completed by the start of March.
