The edible bus stop are back planting at the Barrier Block (Southwyck House) on Wednesday afternoon 1 – 5pm. Everyone welcome to join in.
Founding director Mak Gilchrist says “Now it’s spring we want to add to the momentum started last year and invite the residents and Brixton locals to join us for a community planting afternoon on Wednesday 31 May at the site from 1pm-5pm. We’ll complement the three fruit trees planted last autumn (two Cox’s Apples and a Victoria Plum) with more herbs and a berry garden and lots of beautiful Mediterranean perennial flowers for colour over the summer months. We’ve also got six different types of sunflower seeds to plant, as we know how much kids love them!” Refreshments will be provided by the tenants and residents association.
“We called the project at the central entrance area of Southwyck House “Breaking Down Barriers” but we want to know what the residents would like to call their entrance garden? Come along on the day and let us know. It’s their space and we hope by feeling proud of it, and joining in with the gardening or simply keeping an eye out for it, the site will thrive and continue to be a really great space in Brixton to be respected by everyone. Locals were particularly happy about the fruit trees with their unique tree guards made especially for the site referencing the zig zag of the estates architecture. We hope we can get more fruit trees planted nearby in autumn, so the residents can have an orchard of their very own.”
If you have suggestions for names for the garden send a message to the Edible Bus Stop via social media.
