This year’s Brixton Windmill Harvest Festival features workshops, music, children’s entertainment and a chance to see the sails of the windmill decorated with striking flash sail cloth.

Local talented woodworkers Mike Groves of Skapa Woodstuffs and Ben Willis will be introduced to visitors as they join forces as part of Brixton Design Trail (17-25 September) to celebrate and explore new directions for the old ‘rural vernacular arts’. Mike and Ben will hold workshops and informal talks on their craft throughout the afternoon.

Other activities include the Art in the Heart corn dolly workshop, and a gardening workshop with demonstrations on how to build a green house. Father Nature, a Lambeth based organisation that work with single dads introducing them to gardening, will be building hay stacks.

For children there is face painting and games and a chance to get up close to farm animals with Brixton City Farm. There will be music from the folk group No Frills Band. There’s a chance to see flour being ground at the windmill, and local bakery the Old Post Office will organising baking demonstrations alongside Brockwell Bake who will be selling products made from Brixton Windmill flour. Refreshments will be available as well as a chance to buy Brixton Windmill flour.

As part of the Brixton Design Trail Week local designers Eley Kishimoto will dress the sails on Brixton Windmill with their striking flash design seen earlier this year as part of the Windmill’s bi-centenary celebrations.

Brixton Windmill Harvest Festival is sponsored by The Peter Minet Trust. The event is free and short tours of the windmill can be booked on the day on a first come first served basis. Visit
