As summer begins to turn to autumn, thoughts turn to the harvest – and nowhere more than in the Angell Terrace communal garden, where its grapes have been harvested for sale in Brixton today (10 September).
They will be available from 10am to 5pm at stall 17 on Brixton Station Road – courtesy of the Brixton Market Traders’ Federation.
The grapes, cultivated by John Spicer with help from neighbours, are from vines in the garden behind Brixton Road and off Gresham Road. They are the Black Hamburg variety – as grown in royal greenhouses at Hampton Court Palace – donated by Veolia and planted in 2011.

Friends and neighbours joined John yesterday to try the grapes and bag them up for today’s stall in the garden where you will also find Cox’s Orange Pippin apples grown from a £5 plant from Lidl and other fruit.
Unsold grapes and those not right for table use will be turned into wine. John made 23 litres last year with help from his brother. The Blog can confirm it’s worth drinking, having sampled the 2013 vintage.
