Hazel Turay of Brixton’s Tulse Hill estate has been awarded a British Empire Medal for services to the community. We featured her work as co-ordinator of a Black History Month celebration on the estate in 2015. You may also have read about her in this edition of the Brixton Bugle.
Maurice Charlesworth, who founded the Brixton-based Age UK Lambeth’s Celebrating Age Festival 17 years ago, was also awarded a British Empire Medal.
As Age UK Lambeth’s senior volunteer, Maurice has a leading role in its planning group. With his many years expertise in the arts and in events organisation, he makes an invaluable contribution to the organisation’s efforts to improve the wellbeing of older people across the borough.
Heather Rabbatts, former chief executive of Lambeth council, was made a dame.
Professor Til Wykes, Professor of Clinical Psychology and Rehabilitation at King’s College London, who has lived in Brixton for more than 30 years, was made a dame for her services to clinical psychology.
