The centre will focus on the provision of English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), young people’s re-engagement, employability for adults, English and Maths. The current Brixton centre was built in the 1960s and following the successful planning permission from Lambeth Council, demolition will begin in the New Year. The opening date for the new building, consisting of two schools and a new Lambeth College is likely to be September 2017.
Principal of Lambeth College and Chief Executive, Mr Mark Silverman said: “I am delighted that the refurbished Brixton centre will be open and available to learners for the new term in 2016. As construction work begins, it will create a modern learning centre for Brixton along with a brand new college building.”
The site was previously sold by the college to the DfE. By doing so it has helped to secure the future of the Brixton centre and has enabled investment in the recently opened new Clapham facilities. Lambeth College is three years into a five year strategic plan which is designed to enable it to become an outstanding careers and employability-focused college.
