Your guide to what’s happening in Brixton this week

3-5MINUTES_TEN BULLETS_PosterSaturday October 3: The Ritzy is hosting a special screening and Q&A of the documentary 3 1/2 minutes, Ten Bullets.  The film examines the murder of Jordan Davis, a black teenager who was shot by a middle-aged white man, after a dispute over the volume of the music coming from his car. The Q&A will be held with Jordan’s father, Ron Davis and director Marc Silver. 8.30 pm. £12.60.

Saturday 3 and Sunday 4: Artists and makers across the borough of Lambeth will be opening their studio, work spaces and homes to the public. Doors will be open 3rd and 4th October from 10am to 6pm both days. Venues vary from artists home studios to our larger ‘Hub Venues’ at The Brix in Brixton and Portico Gallery in West Norwood. Entrance is free and the latest updated map can be found at www.lambethopen.com.

Sunday 4: Ebony Horse Club, including tiny Pedro, will be attending the Brockwell Lido Fun Palace Event from 11 am to 5 pm. The members will be doing a demonstration in the park and you can come and speak to some of the members, volunteers and parents.

Sunday 4: Feel like finishing the weekend with some fun? Dee Dee’s Comedy Club in Herne Hill runs a night of laughter every Sunday with special guests, hosted by comedian Junior Booker. Entry free from 7pm.

Monday 5: The first Monday of the month means its Brixton Ping Pong Society’s open tournament. With free entry, two tables, and a wide selection of beer why not try your hand? 7pm-11pm.

Wednesday 7: The Edge is an exciting and eclectic exhibition at Brixton East Gallery of original prints, drawings, paintings and textiles from an emerging London-based art collective, 6328 Studio. The group of artists work in a variety of mixed media and this is their inaugural exhibition. 11am – 7.30pm

Wednesday 7: Herne Hill’s little known theatre The Illusioneer is hosting Midweek Magic Mix, a show that features a small group of London-based-magicians in an intimate space designed just for magic performance.  £12 online, £15 at the door. Starts 7.30 pm.

Thursday 8:  Brindisa Food Rooms will be hosting live music nights every Thursday at their Brixton café at 7.30pm. Their first is acoustic singer- songwriter and guitarist Hockers.

Thursday 8: Every Thursday at Ritzy there is a Ra yoga class with Cara. Ra uses movement and breath to feel lightweight in your body and bright in your mind! Expect yoga with a few ideas borrowed from dance, Pilates, Tai Chi, singing techniques, relaxation techniques and massage. 10am – 11.30am. £7 per class. Beginners to intermediate levels welcome. Please bring your own mat.

Friday 9: Hackney’s forward-thinking electronica group Asian Dub Foundation are back in Brixton for the London launch of new album More Signal More Noise. With Lazy Habits and a Dub Pistols DJ set also on the line-up, its certain to be a raucous night. 10pm – late. £20.

Saturday 10: At Carnegie Library Herne Hill Music Festival showcases London Consorts of Winds – a collective of three wind ensembles: Ancient and Modern Consort, Classical Consort and Clarinet Consort. The event will be organised with the Friends of the Carnegie Library, who will provide refreshments. 11am – 1pm. Free.

Saturday 10:  Pop-up social enterprise restaurant Mazi Mas is hosting a dinner on Social Saturday to celebrate its second season at Ovalhouse theatre. Diners will have the opportunity to meet the Mazi Mas chefs and choose from tapas-style dishes from around the world.  Free tasters will be offered from 5pm and dinner will be served from 6pm. To book a table call 07856 658 936.

tedxbrixtonSaturday 10: TEDxBrixton kicksoff from 12pm with 14 inspirational talks and performances from speakers such as Sam Hall aka DJ Goldierocks and Robyn Parker of Archie Mac London. The event takes place at Brixton Recreation Centre, with free livestreams at the Ritzy, Pop Brixton and Block 336. To reserve for the livestream, email tickets@tedxbrixton.com.
