The National Army Museum will run workshops suitable for both children and adults at the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton during the October half-term school holiday. There is no need to book, just turn up.
It will also present objects from its collections including regimental badges from the Kings African Rifles and the West Indies Regiment.
The workshops are designed to reveal the hidden histories of African and Caribbean people involved in the first world war.
The museum says the week will culminate in an “archive call-out day” for material relating to this period, together with a celebration in music and film.
Family history workshops: October 27, 11am–12.30pm
Family activity day: October 29, 2pm–4pm
Archive day with music and film: October 30, 2pm-9pm.
The museum has a series of short animated films about the war. Its headquarters in Chelsea are closed for redevelopment and due to reopen in 2016.
There is also a great deal about Caribbean and African soldiers in the first world war at the website of the campaign for a memorial to those who died in both world wars.
