Review: Harry Hill at Laugh Out London, 15 September

Laugh out London returned to the Dogstar on Tuesday 15th September, with a sell-out show featuring John Kearns, Andy Zaltzman, Mike Wozniak and Harry Hill.

Apparently the young Brixton audience can be a difficult one, but Tuesday night’s crowd certainly delivered on the guffawing appreciation.

The night was MC’d by ever effervescent Laugh out London regular Tom Webb, who is worth checking out.

Andy Zaltzman, who you may know from his Times Online podcast The Bugle, kicked things off, brilliantly slapping down the audience member who interrupted an anecdote just before the punch line, and delivering some strong observations on ISIS and cricket.

A bit of Katie Hopkins-bashing followed next with Mike Wozniak, who reminded us at times of Eddie Izzard (which is a good thing). With some genuinely false facts delivered on request on hawks, cats and Coca Cola, this was for me the comedy highlight of the night.

After the interval and further warming up from Webb, who encouraged the audience to “get consent, get involved”… the be-wigged and bespectacled John Kearns took to the stage. Kearns has previously said the look isn’t a character – it’s a version of himself, and something most people can probably relate to – with much hilarity.

The top-billed act, Harry Hill, delivered an energetic, wacky set which had the audience in stitches. Hill’s charismatic style means paying strict attention as he moves quickly between jokes, re-visiting previous ones before jumping into a rap.

Laugh Out London’s next Brixton show will be on the 20th October, with four time Edinburgh comedy award winner James Acaster headlining. For more details go to their website and follow them on Twitter
