A man who a stole a car, then drove it into a parked vehicle a week later, has been sentenced to nine months in prison.

Michael Bailey, 53, from Brixton has also been disqualified from driving for 18 months.

On November 10 2014 two officers on patrol in a police car were waiting at traffic lights on Kings Avenue, at the junction with Atkins Road, when they heard a crash behind them.

They arrived at the scene to find an Audi A5 had struck a parked Mercedes.

Bailey got out of the Audi and ran off towards Kings Avenue.

Officers searching for him found him hiding in bushes in a back garden and arrested him.

The Audi he was driving had been reported stolen on November 2.

Bailey was charged on January 12 with aggravated taking and driving away, driving without a licence or insurance and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

He was found guilty and sentenced at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court on August 21.

Police Constable Richard Goodwin, from Lambeth said “I hope this is a stark reminder of the consequences of driving a vehicle dangerously and without the appropriate licence and insurance. The borough is committed to tackling anti-social behaviour caused by those driving on our roads in a dangerous manner and without insurance.”
