The Dulwich and West Norwood MP backed the drive led by Timon Dixon, a 21 year-old Brixton-based activist, and his fellow Youth Leadership Team members from Football Beyond Borders.

Hayes, who was chosen to take over from Tessa Jowell at this year’s General Election and retained the seat for Labour in the General Election, paid a visit to Angell Town estate in Brixton earlier on this month. She met with the group of young campaigners and also had the chance to see for the poor condition a football pitch on the estate.

Football Beyond Borders’s youth leaders discussed the progress of their campaign, including growing support for their online petition launched in June. To date the petition has accrued more than 1,000 signatures. Ms Hayes welcomed campaigners’ calls for a renovated astroturf pitch that will benefit the whole community.

“It was so great to meet this morning with young people from Football Beyond Borders and hear about the campaign to get better football facilities on the Angell Town estate”, said Ms Hayes. “I am delighted to support this campaign and wish Football Beyond Borders every success in getting the funding for the new pitch. I look forward to coming down and seeing local people playing on a brand new facility.”
