The deadline for public views on Lambeth’s Your New Town Hall proposal has been extended until January 16.

The plans, which are also part of Future Brixton, include a 14-storey block of flats in the place of Hambrook house, the demolition of Olive Morris House to make way for a seven-storey block of flats with 74 residential units, replacing part of Town Hall parade with a new civic centre and the renovation of Grade II listed Lambeth Town Hall.

Lambeth Council says the reduction its core office buildings from 14 to two will save the taxpayer £4.5 million per year in the running costs of their civic buildings.

Around 200 new homes will be built across the various new sites, with 40 per cent of these to be “affordable” homes.

The council said they had extended the consultation period to give Lambeth residents more opportunity to respond to the latest proposals before Muse Developments Ltd submit their planning application.

The council says it has already taken on board many of the public’s concerns, such as reducing the Hambrook House site from 20 storeys to 14 after people raised concerns about the height. However requests to refurbish Olive Morris House instead of demolishing the building were rebuffed: the council said findings showed refurbishment would be too costly.

Muse are expected to submit their application in February and begin work later in the year.
