The country’s biggest mental health anti stigma campaign is to launch a six week innovative social marketing drive targeting people from African and Caribbean communities in Brixton and Lambeth.

Exploring the theme Forget the label…just listen, the campaign will use marketing, social contact (which creates opportunities to learn from someone with a personal experience of mental illness) and social media to help end mental health stigma and discrimination in African and Caribbean communities, and will be supported by radio adverts and interviews.

The overall project Time to Change  is run by the charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness. In a partnership with Lambeth council, the launch of the campaign will be at Lambeth Town Hall on Friday 10 October from 7.15pm and will feature presentations from  director Sue Baker, Lambeth cllr Jacqui Dyer and Dr Colin King, founder of the Black and Asian Coaches Association.

An earlier event, at 6pm at the same venue, will see Chuka Umunna MP and others discuss the importance of supporting the local community’s black mental health patients.

There will be a special performance by internationally acclaimed poet and spoken word artist Jean Binta-Breeze, short film screenings and a hot buffet will be provided.

If you wish to attend the launch please email: s.griffiths@time-to-change.org.uk and for a full list of events and to get involved please visit www.time-to-change.org.uk/forgetthelabel
