The Weekly Ritzy Round Up by Robert Makin May 15th – 22nd

Kirsten Dunst and Viggo Mortensen filming in the Acropolis of Athens in Greece.

Despite the fact that I’ve just turned forty I have to admit I’m quite excited about the prospect of seeing Gareth Edwards’ interpretation of the world’s most famous sci-fi monster when Godzilla stomps its way onto the big screen this week. It also gives you a good excuse to seek out Ishiro Honda’s 1954 original, which is a lot darker and foreboding than you’d expect.

Also out this week is classy thriller The Two Faces of January, based on a novel by celebrated author Patricia Highsmith (The Talented Mr Ripley), set in the dusty, sun bleached landscape of nineteen-sixties Greece, and starring Kirsten Dunst and Viggo Mortensen and glamorous tourists embroiled in mysterious murder.

If your idea of entertainment is watching incredibly wealthy professionals suffering emotional turmoil in extremely expensive locations then you’re in for a treat as this week sees screenings of both Concussion and Exhibition. On Saturday the Kid’s Club is showing Japanese animation Patema Inverted, the story of a subterranean princess from a labyrinthine underground kingdom who passes through the danger zone into an equally strange surface world.

Due to circumstance (not choice) I’ve actually seen every single X-Men movie in existence and can’t actually remember any of them. Hopefully ridiculously titled prequel sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past isn’t as instantly forgettable with its tale of time travel, killer robots and dodgy facial hair.

The incredibly smug and self-satisfied Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon travel Italy thanks to the BBC licence fee to review restaurants for The Observer… with hilarious consequences in The Trip to Italy. I’ve heard it described as food porn, which I guess makes Ikea catalogues landfill porn. There’s also a satellite Q&A with the stars after Wednesday’s screening if you haven’t already lost your appetite. And don’t forget there’s still a chance to catch Blue Ruin, The Wind Rises, and Bad Neighbours on the big screen. Have a great week and go see a movie.
