Campaigners organise meetings against Tesco taking over former George IV pub

TIME AT THE MUSIC BAR: Tesco say they intend to turn the George IV into a store

Campaigners against the supermarket Tesco taking over the site of the George IV pub, Brixton Hill, have organised their first public meeting designed to fight the plans.

The event will take place at The White Horse pub, Brixton Hill, at 11am on Saturday (September 8) and all are welcome to come and express their concerns about the proposal.

A planning application to install parking spaces in front of the building has is to be discussed by councillors at a planning meeting, although a date has not yet been set.

The news comes as Chuka Umunna, MP for Streatham, which covers Brixton Hill, has announced a “Question Time-style” meeting between residents and representatives of Tesco, to take place on Friday September 14, at 6pm at Corpus Christi Church Hall, Brixton Hill. The panel will include ward councillor Florence Nosegbe.

Mr Umunna said: “I know a great many people have expressed deep concern about the possible opening of another Tesco store in the local area but have not had the chance to raise their questions and concerns directly with Tesco.

“I am holding this public meeting to give as many people as possible the opportunity to raise their questions and concerns directly with Tesco, and to make sure the local community has a chance to come together to discuss the current plans for the site.”

A Facebook page has now been set up to campaign against the plans.
