Brixton’s Ritzy cinema named best in London by Yahoo

The Ritzy Cinema, Brixton

The Ritzy has been named the best movie theatre in London, and third best in Britain, by Yahoo Movies.

The cinema, owned and run by Picturehouse who also run the Clapham Picturehouse, was highly praised in the online guide released on Friday.

The Ritzy first opened as the Electric Pavillion in 1911 with a 750-seat auditorium, and now boasts four screens, a bar and a live music venue hosting anything from ska to scrabble nights.

Rating it number three in the country, Yahoo Movies said: “The cinema is contemporary with a Grade II listing just like The Electric on Portobello Road. It’s not just a cinema, upstairs there is a lovely bar playing host to some of the well-known and well-loved music of Brixton.”

Every Thursday the Brixton Blog gives you the run-down of the new releases – and classics – on show at the Ritzy thanks to film writer Ash Clark.
