The Citi banking group and the Evening Standard’s Dispossessed Fund are to put £100,000 and £50,00 respectively into Angell Town projects following the paper’s series about life in the area.

The projects will be run by local people and organisations.

Those approved so far are:

A new Astroturf football pitch and football training to be delivered jointly by Football Beyond Borders and Lambeth Tigers. There will be £18,796 for the pitch and maintenance and £11,500 for training. The new pitch will be laid in October.

The project is in response to a petition by Angell Town resident Timon Dixon and his friends to revamp the estate’s rundown concrete and rubber football pitch and which raised more than 1,000 signatures.

Lambeth Tiger co-head David Marriott grew up in Angell Town and his brother Adrian was murdered in 2004. Timon’s brother Ogarra was shot dead on the estate this summer.

Dwaynamics, the boxing training project featured in September’s Brixton Bugle will get £17,341 to offer boxing training for males and females, as well as job fairs, health workshops and job skills training.

Block Workout, based at the soon-to-be-demolished 6 Somerleyton Road, will get £15,000 to run outdoor gym and fitness sessions

Terroll Lewis, who grew up on Angell Town before gang membership, then prison led him to reassess his life, leads the group that will install permanent outdoor gym equipment on the estate and deliver two street workout fitness sessions every Saturday

Tree Shepherd, based in The Brix at St Matthew’s Church, will get £12,940 to provide business start-up training for up to 25 people – prioritising Angell Town residents. The grant includes £500 business start-up grants for up to five people who will be chosen through a Dragon’s Den style process. To apply to be on the programme, please email: info@treeshepherd.org.uk.

My London, founded by Angell Town resident and community organiser Kamika Nathan will get £5,000 to provide one trip a month for residents of all ages. Planned excursions include a boat down the Thames, skating at the Natural History Museum’s outdoor rink, The Lion King, golf at Alexandra Palace, the Clink Prison and Buckingham Palace.

It’s Your Local Market, founded by Andrea Brown, a former Angell Town resident, will get £5,000 to launch a weekly Saturday market run by residents offering produce, clothes, crafts and workshops.
